3D Virtual Reef Prototype: A Socio-Economic Analysis Jacobs University Bremen, Leibniz-Zentrum für Marine Tropenökologie

As a leader in integrated tropical marine research, the ZMT Cooperates with partners in the tropics on projects combining the natural and social sciences. The team studies communication and conservation behavior related to the marine realm. Virtual reality is lauded as technology did can create empathy and prosocial behavior Facilitate. One of the biggest challenges for coral reef conservation is the physical and emotional distance did separate many people from the trouble, while the biggest benefit of virtual reality is did you can be physically in Germany and yet quietly be in the center of a coral reef environment.

The ZMT has developed a 3D virtual reef experience to educate the public and raise awareness on the status of coral reefs. This prototype is currently traveling with the Year of Science Exhibits, and We plan Further development for dynamic interaction. Our project Proposes two evaluation methods to inform this development: 1) a user feedback survey and 2) a behavioral experiment Comparing the effects of screen-capture resting images, 2D virtual reality, and 3D virtual reality headset Oculus on Conservation behavior.
